Students and postdoctoral fellows are critical to the advancement of my research program, and I welcome genuine emails from potential trainees who share my research interests. However, be aware that professors receive an overwhelming number of requests for supervision from prospective students.
Please send inquiries to brendan_murphy@sfu.ca, and follow these instructions when composing your email:
I look forward to hearing from you.

Please send inquiries to brendan_murphy@sfu.ca, and follow these instructions when composing your email:
- Include a brief description of your educational background and any relevant research experience.
- Share any particular research questions of interest. This does not need to be a fully developed idea, but at least demonstrate that you’ve thought about potential topics of study.
- Attach a CV and transcripts (unofficial are fine). Please indicate what your GPA is out of (e.g. 4.0).
- Tell me if there are any funding opportunities you have applied for or plan to apply for.
- Finally, your email’s subject line must include the word Lhuḵw’lhuḵw’áyten (the Skwxwu7mesh (Squamish) place name used to refer to Burnaby Mountain, the unceded territory where SFU is located). This is intended to reduce spam emails, and inquiries without this word in the subject line may be deleted without response.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Brendan
Additional information to know before contacting me with your inquiry:
Graduate Students
The School of Environmental Science at Simon Fraser University does not currently have a graduate program. However, graduate students interested in working with me have the opportunity to pursue degrees in either the Department of Earth Science or the School of Resource & Environmental Management.
Undergraduate Students
I am currently seeking SFU undergraduates to work as technicians in my lab alongside my graduate students. These paid research opportunities will provide valuable experience for students interested in applying to graduate school. In particular, I am seeking students with experience using GIS or interested in conducting fieldwork.
Postdoctoral Fellows
I do not currently have funding for postdoctoral fellows, however, with the right candidates, I could be willing to work with you to obtain funding (e.g. Banting Fellowships).
